What Are Your Family Holiday Plans?

Happy HolidaysFamily Travel Plans This Holiday Season?

Dear Friend,

The Holidays

I hope you have some great holiday plans this year!

We are spending the holidays with extended family   Afterward we may head back out in January, though, as you know by now, I refuse to make solid family travel plans unless absolutely necessary.

Holiday Warrior Upgrades

The Warrior is trying to morph into an ice cube, but I keep fighting back.  We have installed a 50 amp electric plug at our house so we can pull shore power. We also just had installed a septic drain connected to our septic system so that we can use our water while we are here (when it’s not frozen).  I have been working on a tie-in to our propane tank here at the house so that I can pull from that while we are stopped here, but that upgrade is still in the works.

Other Warrior upgrades in progress include replacing the headlights with brighter ones (the stock headlights on the Chevy Kodiak chassis are a joke). That ought to make a big difference when driving on lonely desert roads at night!

What Are Your Holiday Plans?

I am curious to know how you are spending the holiday season.

At home with family and friends?  On an adventurous family travel journey to distant lands?  Or something in between? How is the economy affecting your plans?

Let me know by replying to this post, or send me a note at hugh@hughdeburgh.com.

Happy Holidays!

Hugh  🙂

P.S.:  Just a note about postings here at TPW.  Sometimes there are long breaks between my posts.  There is usually one of two possible reasons for this:

1. I’m spending time with my family, and they always take priority for me, or

2. I don’t have anything to say that I think is worth your time and attention.

I value your time in the same way I value my own.  I’m not going to bother you by writing stuff just to hear myself talk.  And I want to make sure that you know that when you receive a message from me, it’s something that I think is important, and that you may find interesting and useful as well.  🙂

    Hi Hugh!

Our house finally sold on December 1st and we’re spending the rest of December and first week of January wrapping things up before we depart. We are software testers and require only an internet connection in order to work so we’re heading out on our adventure on January 10th, a date we picked back in September. Having a firm date really helped keep things going. Without it, we might have accepted a later closing or would have taken our time. Your book had a lot to do with hastening our departure as well. Why wait?

I am just looking forward to seeing and doing all the awesome things we never would have had we stayed put paying the mortgage. Freedom we have never known. Might be a bit scary at first but we’re ready.

So we’re going to see family (some of whom are not too happy with our plans) and complete the task of selling or giving away the things we don’t need or want. When it’s all said and done we will have reduced the contents of our 2500 square foot home to a small 5 x 10 storage locker. Pretty amazing when you think of it. I guarantee it we will not miss any of that stuff.

Our first stop in January will be San Francisco to meet up with a friend, visit the ocean, and see the city. Any RV places you would recommend!?

    Hi Hugh,

While you’re fighting frozen pipes there, down here in New Zealand we are trying to stay cool in the balmy summer heat. I am headed to the coast with my wife and two small children to enjoy barbeques on the beach with family and friends. Christmas and summer holidays come at the same time of the year around these parts, so lots of time to relax and enjoy.
Love your inspiration Hugh, Merry Christmas.

    Way to go, Mike! 🙂

I wish you all the best.

As far as RV places go, there are so many we’ve been to that my head starts to spin just thinking. If you are asking about in SF, you might try the KOA there that offers a city tour from the campground. We do that a lot – take a campground-based trip into a city so we don’t have to deal with traffic, parking, etc. Done it in SF, DC, NYC, and NO, and enjoyed each experience. I think each time it was from a KOA.

Have a great journey! And keep us updated on your travels! I know I will enjoy hearing about them. 🙂

I can’t wait to visit NZ someday. Have a great summer/holiday season! 🙂
